Marjina’s Journey Towards Better Livestock Care

Marjina Khatun, a farmer from Balikuri Village in Barpeta district, has been rearing goats and cows to support her family’s livelihood. Like many livestock farmers in her community, she was unaware of the importance of preventive vaccination and believed that vaccines were only needed after animals became sick.

When the FST launched its livestock initiative in her village, Marjina became one of the women farmers who actively participated in the programme. Over the past year, she has consistently attended training sessions on livestock disease identification, vaccination, preventive healthcare, and record-keeping. She also participated in exposure visits, where she learned improved livestock management practices from other farming communities.

Applying the knowledge she gained, Marjina changed the way she cares for her animals. She now vaccinates her goats before diseases occur, helping them stay healthier and reducing the risk of illness. The shift from treatment to prevention has improved the overall health of her livestock and strengthened her confidence as a farmer.

Reflecting on this change, Marjina says, “Before the training, I was not aware of the diseases that affected my goats. I vaccinated them only after they became sick. After receiving the training, I now vaccinate them before any disease occurs, and my goats remain much healthier.”

Marjina’s journey reflects how practical knowledge and timely guidance can transform farming practices. By adopting preventive livestock healthcare, she is protecting her animals, improving her livelihood, and setting an example for other women farmers in her community.
