When students became advocates for better learning

The students of Gyandeep Collective in Balarpathar village of Barpeta, aged 12 to 16 and studying in Classes VIII and IX, noticed that their school did not have enough computers. As a result, regular computer classes could not be conducted, affecting their opportunity to develop digital skills.

When the collective raised this concern with FST team, they were guided to identify a practical solution. With support from the team, the students prepared an application to the school authorities and learned how to take the issue forward. The members of the collective then took the lead by submitting the application and making regular follow-ups until the issue was resolved.

Their efforts brought a positive change. The school now has enough computers, and regular computer classes are being conducted. What began as a concern raised by a group of students has resulted in a better learning environment that benefits not only the members of the collective but other students in the school as well.

The experience has strengthened the students’ confidence in working together to bring about change. As one member of the collective shared: “Having enough computers has made our classes more regular and enjoyable. This experience showed us that our voices matter when we work together.”

The story of Gyandeep Collective shows how young people, when supported with the right guidance and encouraged to take action, can work together to bring meaningful improvements to their own schools and communities.
